Specialist and Hospital Referrals: Public and Private
Specialist and Hospital Referrals: Public and Private
If you need to see a specialist or require hospital services during or after your consultation at our clinic, our doctors can issue referrals to external healthcare providers.
Referrals to External Specialists and Hospitals
Our doctors can issue referrals to both private and public specialists and hospitals outside of our clinic. This includes referrals to:
- Private specialists: Such as private consultants in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, haematology, neurology, or other specialties
- Public hospital services: Including public outpatient departments and specialist clinics
- Private hospitals: For specialist consultations, diagnostic procedures, or treatment
- Imaging providers: For MRI, CT scans, or other diagnostic imaging when required
When You May Need a Referral
Your doctor may recommend a referral to a specialist or hospital if:
- Further investigation is required: Such as specialist imaging, diagnostic tests, or expert assessment
- Specialist treatment is needed: For conditions requiring specialist care beyond general practice
- Hospital services are required: For procedures, surgery, or inpatient care
- Second opinion is appropriate: When specialist review would support your ongoing care
How Referrals Are Provided
During your consultation, if your doctor recommends a referral:
- Your doctor will discuss the referral and explain why specialist or hospital care is recommended
- The referral letter will be prepared with your medical history, examination findings, and reason for referral
- The referral may be sent directly to the specialist or hospital, or provided to you for submission
- You may be advised on next steps: Such as contacting the specialist to arrange an appointment
Public vs Private Referrals
Your doctor can refer you to:
- Public hospital services: Where you may access publicly funded care, though waiting times may apply
- Private specialists or hospitals: For faster access to care, typically requiring health insurance or private payment
What to Do After Receiving a Referral
Once you receive your referral:
- Follow your doctor's instructions: Your doctor will advise whether to contact the specialist directly or wait to be contacted
- Check your health insurance coverage if referred to a private specialist or hospital
- Contact the specialist or hospital if required to arrange your appointment
- Keep your referral letter: You may need it for your appointment or insurance claim
